The plant name of green tea is Camellia Sinensis. It is one of the true tea because no processing is done in case of green tea. Like other true teas, green tea also has less amount of caffeine. Green tea has great medicinal importance and used for the cure of fever to heart diseases for centuries.
Side Effects Of Green Tea

Drinking green tea is considered very safe, but there are some side effects to keep in mind. Most of the bad effects of green tea intake can be eliminated by consuming only a moderate amount.
1. Headaches
Green tea can cause headaches in some people because it contains caffeine. People who suffer from migraines should avoid the consumption of green tea. If you have a caffeine sensitivity, it is good to avoid drinking green tea.
2. Iron deficiency
Green tea has some antioxidants that stop the iron absorption in the human body. This side effect can be very deadly in people who are suffering from anaemia. Adding lemon to your green tea can avoid this side effect because vitamin C in the lemon helps in iron absorption.
3. Sleeping Problems
Green tea has two compounds that are directly opposite the sleep:
- 1-theanine
- caffeine
Green tea contains only a little amount of caffeine, but it is still not recommended to consume before going to sleep. This is because of the chemical compound in the green tea which prevents the release of hormones such as melatonin, which helps in sleep. Avoid these bad effects and take green tea no later than five hours before going to sleep.
4. Vomiting
High dosage of green tea can lead to Vomiting and Nausea. If you are daily tea drinker then don't drink more than 4 cups of green tea. If you are just starting out with green tea, start with 1-2 cups of green tea a day and keep an eye on your reaction. It is recommended that if you experience no side effect than increase consumption of it.
5. Liver Disease
The excess amount of green tea consumption can lead to liver damage and disease. It happens due to the high amount of caffeine that can stress the liver.
6. Bleeding Disorders

Green tea can trigger bleeding disorder but it is very rare. Compounds in green tea decrease the level of fibrinogen. Green tea also stops the fatty acids oxidation, which leads to thinner blood. Avoid consuming green tea if you are suffering from bleeding disorders.
7. Bone Health
Excessive use of green tea increases the chance of bone diseases such as:
- Osteoporosis
Green tea contains some compounds that inhibit the absorption of calcium, resulting in decreasing bone density. If you are suffering from any kind of bone disease limit your intake of green tea up to 2-3 cups. If you drink more than this limit then make sure to take calcium supplements in order to support bone health.
8. Dizziness And Convulsions
Green tea consists of caffeine which can cause you to feel dizzy when consumed in large amount. Caffeine is the main cause of motion sickness because it decreases blood flow to the brain and central nervous system. Green tea consumption can also lead to convulsions but very rarely. In some cases, excess consumption of green tea can also increase Tinnitus. Avoid drinking green tea if you are suffering from Tinnitus. Always consume green tea in moderate amount.
9. High Blood Pressure

Consumption of green tea can increase high blood pressure, making it a lethal beverage if you suffer from heart disease. This side effect of green tea is very rare and more research is needed to find out the exact compounds behind the blood pressure increase.
10. Can Cause Diarrhoea
Green tea can cause diarrhoea like problems when consumed in the excess amount. Caffeine generates a laxative effect as it stimulates the clone muscles to contract and relax more frequently. As a result, more frequent trips to the bathroom and can cause an upset stomach.
Is Green Tea Safe?
While there are many side effects of green tea to watch out for, it is considered safe by the Food And Drug Administration when used in moderate amount. Most of these side effects are caused by caffeine. Stick to the recommended amount and don't use green tea if you are sensitive to the caffeine. Aside from that, if you want to take benefits of green tea, take it in moderate amount.
